A personalised map keychain works best when you choose one exact place and let a short message explain why it matters. Use the café where you met, the spot where you got engaged, or a place from a favourite trip. Check the location first, then choose whether you want a map alone or a map with engraving on the reverse.

This guide walks through the choices for our custom map keychain, including the current front-only and two-sided options. Product details and prices were checked on 23 October 2026.

Which place should you put on a map keychain?

Start with a memory your partner will recognise without a long explanation. The most famous place you have visited is not necessarily the most personal one.

  • Where you first met: use the venue or precise meeting point, rather than the whole city.
  • Your first date: choose the place where the date happened. If you visited several places, pick the one that best tells the story.
  • A proposal or wedding: check whether you mean the ceremony venue, the proposal spot or somewhere nearby with a similar name.
  • A shared trip: choose a particular landmark, beach or town you both remember.
  • A first home: decide whether you want the exact address or a broader place that represents that part of your life.

If you are torn between two memories, put one location on the keychain and tell the other story in the card. A single clear brief is easier to check than several competing locations.

How to give an accurate location

The current product accepts a full address, postcode, place name or coordinates, including locations outside the UK. Give enough detail to distinguish the place from others with the same name.

For example, “the café where we met” explains the memory but does not identify the location. A café name followed by the street, town and postcode gives the maker something specific to work with. If you provide coordinates as well, check that they point to the same spot as the written address.

For an outdoor location without an address, identify the exact landmark or point you mean. If you are unsure how to describe it, contact us before ordering. Do not guess a postcode for a nearby building and assume it marks the right place.

Front-only or front-and-back engraving?

Our map keychain is made from stainless steel and is listed as 2 mm thick. The map goes on the front. Select Front + Back if you also want a personal message on the reverse; the Only Front option is for the map alone.

At the time of checking, all four listed variants were available:

  • Only Front, No Gift Bag: £12.99.
  • Only Front, With Gift Bag: £14.99.
  • Front + Back, No Gift Bag: £14.99.
  • Front + Back, With Gift Bag: £16.99.

Choose front-only when the place tells the whole story. Choose two-sided engraving when a date, names or a short phrase would make the memory clearer. The gift bag is a separate packaging choice; select the variant you want on the live product page and confirm its current price before paying.

Short message ideas for a couple's map keychain

Use the back for a caption to the map. These are original wording suggestions, rather than promises about how many lines a particular design will hold:

  • “Where our story began”
  • “The place we became us”
  • “Still my favourite hello”
  • “Our first adventure”
  • “One place. So many memories.”
  • “Alex & Sam · 12 October 2024”

A date can refer to meeting, getting married or moving in; choose the one you want to remember and check it carefully. Writing the month as a word can avoid ambiguity between day-first and month-first formats, provided it fits your chosen message.

For a message that only the two of you will understand, use a short phrase from that day. Keep the longer explanation in a handwritten card. For other occasions, see our personalised gift message guide.

The 200-character box is for all your details

The current product instructions give a 200-character limit for the personalisation box. That is the space for your location and any reverse message together. It is not a promise that 200 characters can be engraved on the back.

Label the two parts clearly: “Front location: [precise place]. Back message: [your wording].” Use only the back-message part if you have selected the Front + Back variant. If a full address leaves little room, shorten the message or ask us about your brief before ordering.

Do not replace an accurate location with a vague one just to fit a long quote. The map needs the correct place; the card can hold the rest of the message.

Map keychain questions

Can I choose a location outside the UK?

Yes. The current custom map keychain instructions accept locations outside the UK. Supply a precise place name, address or coordinates and check the details before ordering.

Can I add a message to the back?

Yes, when you select Front + Back. Enter the reverse wording alongside the front location in the personalisation box, within its current total limit.

Does the price include two keychains?

The linked product is a keychain with personalisation and packaging options. It is not described as a matching pair. Check the quantity you need rather than assuming that “for couples” means two items.

Is a map keychain a good alternative to a map plaque?

Choose a keychain for someone who would enjoy carrying the memory. Choose a map gift for display if you want the location to become part of the home. Browse our personalised keychains if you would prefer another style.
